Firewalls |

|
Use a firewall. Most operating systems are automatically configured to listen for
friendly communication from other PCs. Unfortunately, this leaves your PC vulnerable
to unfriendly communication from unfriendly PCs. A firewall automatically blocks
all communication to and from PCs you have not specifically allowed. A firewall
will stop malicious users from communicating with your PC and also prevents malicious
software on your PC, like viruses or spyware, from communicating with other PCs.
Firewalls can be hardware or software based. Hardware based firewall can be fairly
expensive but they will protect every PC on your network from Internet based attacks.
Many cable/DSL routers come with built-in firewalls. Software based firewalls tend
to be less expensive and can protect your PC from internal and Internet based attacks
but you need to have the firewall software installed on every PC on your network.
Windows XP Service Pack 2, Apple’s OS X, and most Linux distributions have a firewall
built in. Make sure you have it enabled and take some time to familiarize yourself
with its configuration.
