1.) Double check everything before downloading

It is much harder to hack personal information from an internet user then it is to get it straight from you. The easiest way to do this is by "tricking" you into downloading something to your computer or mobile device.

Before you click any download link, ask yourself these questions:

1)    Do I know the company that produced this software?

2)    Do I trust the person who sent me the link?

3)    Do I need this software for my daily life?

4)    Did I know this attachment was going to me?

If you answered no to any of these questions, do not click on the link or attachment and close your browser. Whether you're on your personal or public device, stick to these rules. Your mobile device has just as much personally information on it as a desktop computer does.

2.) Double-check when shopping online

Some scammers are stealing money by promising goods, and never deliver them. This scam does happen year round but heightened during the holiday season.

If you shop the secondhand market, try to look locally. Never send or wire payment through unsecured sites or methods. If you are purchasing an item through a private seller, make sure to meet them in a public place, and double check the item is the way you expected before handing over any money.

3.) Read the reviews first

Make sure to read the reviews before making a purchase on an item.
